In PEOPLE’s exclusive sneak peek at this weekāsĀ Doubling Down with the DerricosĀ episode, Darian learns that she didnāt didnāt get accepted to her dream school, New York University. While she appears disappointed, her parents Karen and Deon offer their support.
āI felt awesome about my audition, but this rejection letter, it just makes me feel like I’m not good enough,ā the 18-year-old admits. āIt makes me rethink all of my choices.ā

āI am so proud of you for going on this journey,ā Karen tells her daughter.
āYou worked your butt off and I just love you for that. So you go upstairs and you go rest your little tired mind, giving this your all, thatās what counts,ā she adds before the pair share a hug.
Karen and Deon then worry that the rejection letter will shatter their daughterās self-confidence.
āI don’t want her to look at it like rejection,ā Karen says in a confessional. āI want her to look at it like a redirection. It’s redirecting her to exactly where she’s supposed to be.ā

āI think my biggest concern is knowing how to get her to overcome this,ā Deon adds. āYou know, teenagers, they lack understanding that life will give you something that appears to be bad that’ll wind up being for your better good.ā
Karen knows it needs to be a team effort when it comes to building up her daughterās self-confidence, adding, āI want to make sure she doesn’t have a fear of not being good enough.ā
She goes on to reflect on what she learned from āthe ordeal,ā saying, āI need to be communicating with [my] spouse and the family, our team, and not trying to spearhead it on my own to look at the support that I have and come and talk and say, āHey, this is what I see.āā
āI was beating myself up because I was like, āLook, this girl is talented, and this, for you to let her be that vesselā⦠I just felt this pressure from me,ā she continues as she breaks down in tears.
Deon then gives her a hug and tells his wife that acknowledging their daughter’s actions āmeans everything.ā
Deonās mother, Marian “GG” Derrico, adds, āYou can be comfortable with yourself still knowing as her mother, you had her back.ā

InĀ a statement to PEOPLEĀ following the news of their divorce, Karen and Deon said, āTogether, we remain unified in the parenting of our 14 beautiful children ā their well-being is our priority. We thank everyone for their understanding and support as we move forward for the good of our family.”
Season 5 of the family’s TLC show, whichĀ premiered in 2020, chronicles Karen and Deon juggling their kids while also searching for a new house, which has been a “forever process and is putting a strain on Deon and Karenās marriage,” per an official synopsis.
