Doubling Down With the DerricosĀ starsĀ KarenĀ andĀ Deon DerricoĀ divided fans with a bold move amidĀ Marian “GG” Derrico‘s cancer battle.
On June 2, KarenĀ took to InstagramĀ withĀ GoFundMe campaignĀ details to raise money for her ex-husband’s mother after GG stopped chemotherapy amid her lung cancer fight.
“šš¾šš¾š«¶š¾ā¤ļø#motherinlove#GG#fightingcancer,” the formerĀ TLCĀ star andĀ mom of 14Ā captioned her update.
In the comments, fans of larger-than-life family were mixed in their reactions to the fundraising effort for GG, 75.
One Instagram user wrote, “ššššoh GG please get well soon your our internet Grammy.”
Another shared, “Sending my prayers š ā¤ļø.”
Someone else commented, “I’ll be happy to make a donation for GG without any questions or hesitation. . šš¾š„°.”
However, other followers were confused as to why the reality TV family asked the public for money.
One critic pointed out, “Not being funny but your families worth 6 million, I’m pretty sure you’d all have insurance also! These fund raisers are for people who can’t afford treatment.”
Someone else echoed, “Take care of your mother and stop begging for people to send money! There is way more sick people in need of money then your family!”
A different follower wondered, “Will we have proof of medical invoices and travels etc for the public that donates?”
Meanwhile, yet another follower asked, “Is this scam?”
More than $5,000 of the $140,000 goal has been raised so far.
On her ownĀ InstagramĀ grid, GG sent a message to fans who have already donated.
She wrote, “I just canāt thank you all enough and I simply canāt express the level of gratitude it gives me as a 75 year old lady, to know how Iāve touched the hearts and lives of so many people that you all would rush to share your advice of holistic care and Drās and now, donating to me which allows me the opportunity to explore holistic health professionals.”
GG concluded, “Iām excited at just the thought that I now can have more of a fighting chance! I hope to meet many of you in person one day and hug your necks. Also the link to the GoFundMe is in my bio!”
During anĀ exclusive interview withĀ Parade, Deon explained that it has been “very challenging navigating through the many changes” of his mothers’s health. He added that he “couldn’t get through it without the prayers.”
The devoted son continued: “GG, now she’s still just dealing with the residual effects of the chemo. So she still has good days and bad days. You know, she has days when I’m asking God like, āGod, what now?ā And then she has days, I said, āOh my, you know you’re looking pretty good today.ā”
Although the Derricos confirmed that Season 6 ofĀ Doubling Down With the DerricosĀ was not happening with TLC, the family said they’reĀ working on another reality show with a different network.
